These beautiful mats and bags are hand-woven from the pandanus leaf.  Most village girls learn the craft
and traditionally it was the hereditary role of the women of certain tribes.  The pandanus leaves are cut and
laid outdoors to cure, then stripped of the spiny edges and boiled and dried.  The traditional method for
blackening the leaves for contrasting patterns is to bury them in mud for days and then boil them with
special leaves.  The dried pandanus leaves, made flexible by scraping with shells, are split into strips of
about 1 to 2cm.  The mats are extremely durable and will greatly enhance your tropical decor.  You will
notice a colourful trim around the mats.  The feathers of the beautiful Kula Parrot were once used for
adorning the mats, but that practice has now been banned in the interest of preserving these precious
birds. Wool has replaced the use of the feathers and is still referred to as "Kula".
Also hand-made made by the women of Korovisilou and
featuring the "Kula" trim, this mat has the more tightly-woven
edges, a style that is normally preserved for the Chief's mats.
