The Fijian Cula Cula Throwing Club was used in battle situations.  The head of
the original weapons were heavily weighted to give distance and impact after
the weapon has been thrown.  The handle on this one is beautifully covered
with pandunas leaf matting dyed in light and dark shades.

The following items are made out of Fijian Vesi (hardwood which has been aged in the earth).
Nothing needs to be said about what the Cannibal Fork was used for in days gone
by.  The name says it all.  It does make a great egg beater or a salad tosser or for
eating spaghetti or just as a decoration.  These items were crafted and carved by
the boys in the village of Totoia in the Lau group of Fiji Islands.

The fork in the top picture has two beautifully carved back-to-back turtle designs
around the top and a pandanus leaf wrap around the handle.

The Lali is a Fijian drum.  It was an important part of traditional Fijian culture, used as a form of
communication to announce births, deaths and wars.  Today the Lali is used in the villages to
call people to an event, such as dinner or to church, or to "happy hour" as we recently found
out.  Different sized drums have different tones and are also used in music.  These are smaller
replicas of the larger drums, which can be six feet long and two feet high, and each comes
with the two drumsticks.
The larger Lali Drum featured at the right is a new item, made from a
heavier wood, and has a beautiful design carved into each side of the drum.

western side of the big island of Viti Levu.  The bowl has Fiji
Red Mud-colored detailed carvings around the rim.  It would
make a good sugar bowl or put it on your dresser to hold your
jewelry.

Shiny Wooden Bowl

item No. 08009
Size:               6" diameter x 1-1/2" high
Price:             $10.00
This item is one of our personal favourites.  The craftsmanship
and detail of the etching is amazing!  This fancy turtle dish is
carved out of Vesi (Fijian hardwood) with Fiji Red Mud
coloured etchings which stand out beautifully against the
dark-coloured wood which is highly polished.

The bottom part of the turtle is a bowl and the top part is the lid
with another turtle carving on it.  The bowl has four
mother-of-pearl insets, one on each side, and the bottom
turtle's eyes are mother-of-pearl insets.

This is considered to be the most Fijian of all war
clubs.  It is also referred to as the “beaked battle
hammer” or the “pineapple club” and is a
collectible item amongst “Star Wars” fans.

The Totokia was mainly used by chiefs in warfare
100 years ago, designed to drive or peck a neat
hole through the enemy’s skull, the weight of the
bulky head being concentrated in the point of the
beak.  It was particularly favored for murder and
skirmish warfare in thick brush, the heavy head
driving the beak through the skull without a long
warning swing which was likely to alert the target,
or catch on undergrowth.

These clubs were also used in open battle to kill
wounded enemies, to execute offenders and
sometimes to severely beat social criminals about
the body.
